Helping Hands Project

Star of Hope Foundation started the "Helping Hands" Project in 2006 in Strumyani Municipality, Blagoevgrad area. In this municipality, there is a high percentage of elderly people living on their own, who need daily care. Also in the remote villages there are children living in social isolation.

In order to expand and improve the quality of the local social services, as well as to reach a higher number of children and adults in need in the remote areas of Strumyani Municipality, we created a new job position there for a social worker. The project is implemented in partnership with Helping Hands-Switzerland, the Administration of Strumyani Munucipality and the local Social Protection Department. For the needs of the project, Star of Hope provides to the Strumyani Municipality a minibus to use.

The main activities of the "Helping Hands" Project are:

- Provision of humanitarian aid;
- Home visits to lonely elderly or disabled people, assistance in dealing with paperwork and accompanying them to various institutions and organizations;
- Providing logistical support for children with disabilities to visit a Rehabilitation Day Centre;
- Counseling for children and families at risk;
- Organizing and conducting summer camps for underprivileged children;
- Moral and emotional support.

The work of our social worker is highly appreciated by the local social services and municipal administration, but what brings the greatest satisfaction is the recognition of all those, whose lives have been changed and have received a chance for a better future.
