Social Integration of Children and Teenagers Living in Institutions

Since its founding, Star of Hope has been working to improve the living conditions and quality of services provided in the following social institutions: "Knyaz Boris I" Special Needs Vocational Training School in Sofia; Orphanage in Roman; Special Needs Boarding School in Dolno Draglishte village, Razlog Municipality.

The team of experts from Star of Hope, together with volunteers from Bulgaria and abroad, regularly visit children and young people in the above mentioned social institutions. The aim of these visits is socialization and integration of the children. Our activities are: training programmes lead by specialists on moral values and practical topics like: “Healthy Teeth”, “Hygiene”, “Sex Education”, “The Harm of Addictions: Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking”; outings; sporting events; art & crafts workshops; painting; music and others.

Training programs for the prevention of deviation behavior:

- Our team, together with a prison social inspector, conducts lectures and group discussions in order to prevent criminal acts and antisocial behavior. The program is implemented with the assistance of the administration of the Bobov Dol Prison. We have organized meetings with former prisoners and visit to Sofia Prison. This enables the young people to realize what the consequences might be if they allow anger and aggression to control their actions;

- In partnership with the Women's Information Center in Sofia, we conduct lectures and multimedia presentations on prevention of risky sexual behavior and the negative consequences from it. In 2014 we included a new theme: "Prevention of addictions: smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling, theft, etc."

- Another program is designed for young people who are about to leave the social institution. It is aimed at developing skills for job search, integration in a working environment, achieving work sustainability and preparation for independent living.

Through the training programs, organized by Star of Hope, children and youth from institutions receive equal access to information and develop skills that provide a chance for a better future.

  • Integration of underprivileged young people

Our Foundation continues to support young people without parental care after they leave the social institution and start their independent lives. We perform consulting and counseling, and provide material and moral assistance to ease the transition from institutional to independent living.

Dimitar grew up in orphanages. After graduating from the Special Needs Vocational Training Center in Sofia, in 2010 he came to Star of Hope’s halfway house and stayed there for two years. The numerous speech therapy lessons with Dimitar have improved his communication skills and are helping him in his social life as well as in his current evening high school education. Today Dimitar lives on his own, has a permanent job and with his diligence and strong will, he is a role model to many.
