Social Work Among Adults with Disabilities

Home for Adults with Physical Disabilities and Halfway House for Adults with Physical Disabilities, Dolno Draglishte, Razlog Municipality

These institutions in the village of Dolno Draglishte are for adults with disabilities, most of whom are not able to care for themselves. Our desire is to bring encouragement, hope and love for the residents. We enjoy spending time with them. During Star of Hope’s visits, together with volunteers from Bulgaria and abroad, we work on different craft projects with the residents, play entertainment games, have fellowship with them, encourage them, go for walks, etc.

Every year for Christmas we visit the residents and give them individual gifts. Many times our team has been accompanied by volunteers - musicians and singers, and their performances have made the celebrations special for the residents and staff.

Besides the above mentioned activities, in April 2013, with the help of a team of specialists, Star of Hope organized and conducted eye examinations for the residents and staff of the Home and the Halfway House.

Star of Hope also helps the home through the provision of material resources. We have donated food, clothes, bed linen, equipment for rehabilitation, kitchen equipment. We have also funded much needed renovations in the Home.

“The partnership of our Home with Star of Hope lightens the faith of our residents and keeps their dignity alive – people, who have lost the most important thing in life. During the Christmas holidays, they visit us and give individual gifts to all the residents and staff. We all look forward to the Star of Hope’s visits with excitement and joy. It’s a great pleasure to work with Star of Hope.”

Home for Women with Mental Disturbances and Halfway Houses, Razdol, Strumyani Municipality

This home and associated two halfway houses, have a very remote location in the mountains, near the Macedonian border. Because of its distant location and the stigma of the society towards those with mental health illnesses, the residents do not have many visitors. Qualified personnel are hard to find to work there. However, Star of Hope is able to honor and show care and love to these women by visiting the home and offering a variety of support. Since 2001, we have provided new showers, water heaters, electric radiators, personal nightstands for each woman, bed linen, boots, warm socks, scarves, winter hats, winter gloves, slippers, toiletries, etc. We have also held medical examinations with specialists. During our visits, with the help of our volunteers, the residents participate in a variety of activities, including nail painting, hair coloring, Handicrafts workshop, etc. Despite the uneasy roads and heavy winter conditions, every year for Christmas we visit these institutions and give gifts to each one of the women from the home and the halfway houses.
